Ski Mountaineering
Ski mountaineering is the act of climbing a mountain before you ski it, and can be achieved in a variety of ways. For some ascents you may be able to skin to the top, for others, you may have to strap your skis on your pack and climb the slope you are going to ski. The climbing can involve steep snow, ice, and sections of rock.
Crampons, ice axe, rope and harness may be required. For the descent, you can chose a line as extreme as you want. There are gentle slopes from the summit or there are couloirs that may require a rappel to get started. Therefore, a more comprehensive skill set and equipment list is required for ski mountaineering than for backcountry ski touring.
